Shanghai Revue...

Years and years and years and years ago I picked up Shanghai's CD: "Esoterica" For those of you poor souls who haven't had the chance to pick it up yet, you should, you're letting the team down.

Great little release - the musician wanker in me says it's really well composed, arranged and recorded. Lots of variety both within the songs and from track to track. The hardest thing to do when somebody attempts this is to not appear wanky, or just doing it because you can. One of the best things about this release, in my humble opinion.

Each song is rock solid, with a great main melody, but plenty of things going on - timing shifts, key changes etc etc, but it never looses focus, and the album rarely 'rambles' unnecesarily.

Band is as tight as a ducks arse. But what happened!?! I picked up the CD around four - five years ago and that was the last I heard of Shanghai! Rumours were about one of my friends played with someone who was related to the drummer... doo doo doo doo.

Anyway, a fantastic little release, great little songs, flawlessly produced and recorded. Well worth listening too, especially if you're a musician and can fully appreciate the intricacies in this fantastic little EP.

So what happened to the band?

(Ramble out)

That's quite possibly one of the best reviews I've ever heard about my music...

Kind of makes it all worth it...

Oh, and, nothing happened really.
The CD took a lot out of us. Me especially
We played live for a little while longer, then needed a break.
Some of us went overseas.
I was gone for a year.
When I got back everyone had splintered off, doing their own thing.
I guess I was the glue of the band.
Try as I have over the last few years, it's been impossible to get everyone back together again.
I've written about another 2 CD's worth of material, which I'm hanging to get happening.
I'm hoping to get something happening again with Shanghai by years end, or early next year.

It is the love of my life, and will definitely resurface, eventually.

Thanx for your interest Marlon, it's really appreciated...

Come on now...

I'm only with you because you did Shanghai.

Now THAT'S gotta be the greatest compliment!

Fuck yes, get it back together!

The most frustrating thing is that you've probably missed the pseudo pop bandwagon. Darth Vegas, Rico Tetis (sic) etc have all had their moment, and in my opinion, if you guys were half as good live as you sound recorded, you would blitz them. Also, you guys wrote legitimate songs, not just a mishmash of simple shit with effects over the top...

Anyway, get the band back together, you're on a mission from God.

Yeah, I never really wanted to get lumped in with that Psuedo Pop thing.
I see a lot of those bands as "joke bands", focusing a lot on humour etc.
Shanghai really wasn't about that.

shanghai was about the people behind the organization, and it is apparent in their charitable deliverance of post-chaff opusi.

for some, shanghai is that which never was. yet for others, it is that which always will be.

shanghai is not a noun, it is a verb.
