A man who has been involved in a tense stand-off with heavily armed police at a Sydney unit block since Monday night is believed to be a prison escapee.
Local police and members of the state protection group have been surrounding the inner-city Housing Commission block on Henry Avenue in the inner-city suburb of Ultimo since 5pm (AEDT) on Monday, a police spokesman said.
Negotiators had been speaking to the man around the clock, over the phone and through the apartment's front door, but as of this afternoon the stand off showed no signs of ending.
A neighbour, who'd been fielding calls from reporters all morning, said police had shone floodlights at the unit overnight, but otherwise the stand-off had been uneventful.
"He did shout a few things," the neighbour told ninemsn. "But other than that there hasn't been much happening."
Police would not confirm reports the man is 28-year-old Michael Rodney White, who escaped from Long Bay Jail last November.
