Well I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in on the whole thing.
Having been at Club Blink before, I missed all the supports which was a shame because I wanted to see Fish Fingazz post-Denis, though I'm sure that they wouldn't have interested me all that much.
I'm not really a fan of Mz Ann Thropik, and if Channy wasn't in the band I wouldn't have shown up. But that aside, this show was a lot better than the last time I saw Mz Ann, which was many a year ago at the Hopetoun Hotel supporting Switchkicker (from memory...)
I was qutie impressed by the stage presence of the band. The outfits were pretty funny, but with the theatrics of Mz Ann it did work really well. I've never been a fan of Kerry's guitar sounds, and he can't escape that MM9 sound, but his energy is always great. Same with you Channy, I was very impressed by the way you conducted yourself on stage, and the biscuit thing was cute, as was the outfit. You should be very proud of your performance.
To be honest, the aspect for me that lets you down is Magdelena. She's great from an image point of view, and it's no doubt that one of the reasons that Mz Ann has a following is the image (you just had to look at the crowd) but her vocal performance is fairly weak, as are her melody lines. Also, the in-between song banter was hilarious, but tragically so. No doubt I'll get hounded for that, but that's how it felt from an outsider's perspective. The suicide comments were cringeworthy.
Dynamite for me was the strongest song on the night: catchy and a good hook line, and one that got your feet moving. The others were solid, but again they didn't really grab me.
I guess it's a difficult predicament: Mz Ann have been able to garner a fanbase with an image that the crowd can relate to, but in doing so it alienates the rest of the music fan population. The challenge I see is to rise above the image, where it becomes an accompaniment to the music, rather than the drawing card.
Though I'm looking forward to hearing the EP because judging by what I've heard so far, Luis you've done a killer job on the production.
