Sydney Festival 2008

In a coup for the 2008 Sydney Festival, Icelandic singer Bjork will perform at the Opera House in January.

Only 5000 tickets will be available for the performance on the Opera House forecourt on January 23.

Bjork will perform songs from her most recent album Volta as well as material from her back catalogue.

Tickets will go on sale on November 2, the day after the Sydney Festival releases full details of its program. Ticket prices were not available today.

The festival has already secured Brian Wilson, the pop genius behind the Beach Boys, for a series of concerts.

Bjork, who will also perform at The Big Day Out, is one of contemporary music's most original artists.

A child star who released her first record at the age of 11, she gained international attention as a member of Icelandic group the Sugarcubes.

Her unusual voice - U2 guitarist The Edge once compared it to "an ice pick through concrete" - and willingness to push musical boundaries led her inevitably to a solo career.

It began in 1993, with the release of the single Human Behaviour and has continued with albums including Post, Vespertine and Volta, an album described by Rolling Stone as "Ten luxuriant, often dark songs ranging from Martian electronica to inimitable balladry to id-channeling reveries, with African percussion, thick brass and deeply emotional singing".

It was not known if Bjork's partner, the acclaimed American artist and filmmaker Matthew Barney will accompany her to Australia.
