BRIAN Wilson will headline the next Sydney Festival, the Daily Telegraph can reveal.
After giving us Elvis Costello in 2006 and Lou Reed last summer, festival boss Fergus Linehan has secured the pop daddy of them all for his next program in 2008.
The legendary Beach Boys icon will be the king of Sydney Festival 2008. Wilson will play a gigantic free concert in the Domain on Saturday January 5 to open the festival, and then a series of other ticketed shows throughout the 21-day party.
The big free opening night gig will be a Brian Wilson greatest hits extravaganza, featuring rolled gold Beach Boys pop hits such as Surfin' USA, I Get Around, Help Me Rhonda, California Girls, Wouldn't It Be Nice and Good Vibratons.
Wilson, 65, will also do two separate strings of shows for indoor city venues. One will be a showcase of his ground breaking Beach Boys 1966 album Pet Sounds. The other is a new work called That Lucky Old Sun (a Narrative) which had its world premiere at London's Royal Festival Hall last Monday night.
