Played in both places and seen gigs in both places have to say the vibe for the art's is stronger in Melbourne not just music but art, film etc... Music wise for the heavier end of town Brisbane does Sydney like a dinner as well...

There are definately more smaller venues down there and I have to say places like the Espy and The Corner Hotel are the two best live venues I have set foot in (here or overseas). But at the end of the day if you are a good band in Sydney people will come and see you no matter what.

The article only talks about "rock" venues as well. I think there are still many people going along to see jazz, funk and acoustic music. I sat in with a funk band at The Basement a little while ago and we had 500 people there and I bet nobody has heard of the band...

I strongly believe as a "rock" band if you can have big crowds in Sydney you can play anywhere (and I mean anywhere globally) and be successful.

For me though I love the vibe in Melbourne. I love the pub areas of Fitzroy and Carlton that kind of crusty Bohemian vibe that reminded me of Petersham and Newtown perhaps 15 or so years ago. If I could secure some form of work down there and didn't have committments I would be down there in a heartbeat.
