If it doesn't hurt anyone, and helps an artist produce, then why does it matter?

I'd like to separate "composition" from "performance". Write whatever you want to drugs - great things have come from drugs (Bill Hicks' monologue from Nucleus's "Third Eye"), but as you should know Luis performing music is a personal experience. If you want the audience to connect with the music, how can you expect them to if you're not being yourself?

How is being on drugs not being yourself if you're a drug addict?

People have been getting off their faces and writing music for like um eons...

I don't think you need to take drugs to write music, but alot of artists have written some amazing shit whilst off their noggins...

I agree. I realise it's not a new thing. I've even written songs whilst tremendously intoxicated and not remembered writing them the day after. Different to "drugs" I know.

But's its one thing to use drugs to perform and the such and another to need them. There's an obvious line that is crossed from recreation to addicition, but the mindset I was implying was that it's seen as acceptablel to NEED drugs eg ezekiel ox

Maybe "being yourself" is the wrong term, how about "in an altered state of consciousness".

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Mike Patton as a poster-boy for the no-drugs side. Patton claims the only drug he does is caffiene.

And I think a prime example of glorified drug users is Pete Doherty. People seem to love this smacked out loser, and his music is bad, there seems to be nothing good about his music, yet he's performing with Elton John.

And yeah, Full Scale still suck, whether they're on drugs or not.

yeh it's funny I view drugs alot more loosely....caffeine and alcohol are definately drugs and you can hear or see the things whilst created under its "influence"

David Lynch is famous for going to a particular diner bunging down alot of espresso with sugar and doodling on napkins to create many of his movies..Twin Peaks being a prime example. After all caffeine is like a legal form of speed in high doses. Man one of my friends was hospitalised from too much coffee in one day.. (up near the 30 cups of espresso mark in a short amount of time stupid I know)

listen to the music of Tom Waits, The Pogues and stuff from the blues and Irish traditions and you have music produced by "alcohol".

I don't know about Patton....have no definitive proof either way..

I agree if you are a bad muso your music will still be bad but one cannot listen to The Doors, Hendrix, Pink Floyd and not acknowledge the affects of drugs in their music....

And man the best way to remember creating stuff is to record everything...most of it will probably be crap but there might be that one creative gem in there..
