The Flaming Lips believe that enthusiasm can save the world. And anyone who has been to their giant ballon and confetti funfest concerts would be hard pressed not to agree. On their 11 th studio album-hey,these guys have been at it since 1983-they continue their magical mission to mash musical genres and conjure alternative universes, all the while making some simple but effective political statements.
The political statements and prevailing theme of death, albeit spun in the Lips quirky and almost child-like way, give the album a melancholic weight which could prove a bit of a bummer to fans expecting more "happy-happy,joy-joy"moments.
But the gloominess is tempered with their irresisible bubblegum acid rock poppiness and trippy bleeps and whistles.
The album's first highlight hits you at the second song in,free radicals is the best song Prince hasn't recorded in the past decade and be careful to listen very closely so you don't miss the rude bodily noises.
The next highlight is My Cosmic Autumn Rebellion,an organ-driven homage to 1960's psychedelia.
It overtakes me is a triumph, kicking off with alt-pop,air-guitar pop heaven and chipmunk harmonies in the chorus, before morphing into an atmospheric choral vocal, set to an equally spacy soundtrack.
The Flaming Lips may not make you bounce around the lounge room with this record but they will make you smile and wonder how they do it.
