Triple J, like any other station, has to appeal to the broader audience and try to get as many listeners as possible, however the J's have to do it without overstepping the "commercial" boundary.
I agree that JJJ play some awful shit, stuff that doesn't deserve to be on rotation, but it is undeniable that they are great supporters of Australian music and we'd be a lot worse off without them. I am disappointed however that "Home and Hosed" is yet to return - 3 hours a day of all Aussie music was one of the best ideas JJJ have had in a long time. That, and the extended versions of the Soundlab!
Bertie Blackman (NSW artist) made a great point when she said that when she got played on Triple J, her audience tripled! Andrew, your point about the internet is valid and I for one search for new music on the net, but I take a proactive approach in my search for music whereas many people prefer to listen to the radio to hear new artists. Thus, we end up in a situation whereby those listening for new music will hear new music chosen by radio stations. But, that's with every radio station!
And you cant deny Wolfmother's appeal, they pulled one of the largest crowd's I've ever seen to a Big Day Out. Like them or hate them, they're Aussie and they're spreading the Aussie music word, not just in this country but around the world.
My main point is that we should support anything that supports local talent, because when's it's gone we'll have the shits a lot more.
See you ALL on Friday at the Excelsior Hotel!
