Strapping Young Lad = metal

Vool get pretty heavy but its not really metal (to me anyway..) its more like heavy rock with some metal leanings.

It depends what you class as metal though...

Karnivool probably do make metal songs... but what kind of metal? "Metal" covers many flipping subgenres.

But are all there songs metal? I don't like how just because a band makes the majority of their songs in a genre, that they become a "so and so genre" band, instead of a band that just happens to do "so and so genre". Was Mr Bungle a Metal band? They certainly incorporated metal into some of their songs. But you wouldn't call them a "insert genre here" band. Perhaps a "Genre hopping band" or something like that.

As for actually staying on topic... there's plenty of Australian bands, even in Sydney, that i haven't heard at all and ones i haven't heard enough to be able to know if they sound similar or compare in terms of songwriting/style/etc. to The Locus Scene.

Off the top of my head, i find it hard to name any (possibly The Oceans in terms of something or other), but having seen a few bands, The Locus Scene definitely didn't stand out significantly when i first saw them (though they did make some impression). Getting down to specifics seems a bit of a task...

If you were to listen to their first demo, then they definitely were. Then they became a Ska/Funk band. Then fused the 2 and were Funk/Metal. Then they eventually became their own thing...

Well, i knew they started out doing Slayer inspired metal (and it was that demo that Jim Martin was in love with when he suggested the vocalist to audition for Faith No More).

But i still prefer to think of genres being within bands rather than bands being within genres.

Some bands are though.

A band like Slayer, for example, has never deviated into thte realms of funk, soul, or spiritual meditation music. They are very much a metal band.

Same with countless others...
