Aussies booziest daters in world: survey

Australians are among the booziest daters in the world and least likely to say intelligence turns them on, an international survey has found.

Eighty per cent of Australian men and 70 per cent of women admitted to drinking too much to try to impress possible partners, according to the annual "Romance Report" by publisher Harlequin.

The survey of 1,500 men and women on the dating scene in 16 countries, including Australia, was released on Wednesday in the lead up to Valentine's Day on February 14.

It also found Aussies, 100 of whom were included in the survey, were the least likely to nominate intelligence as their top turn on.

No Aussie men and only 10 per cent of their female counterparts thought intelligence was more important than physical appearance, a sense of humour and confidence.

Romance Report spokeswoman Margaret Lawson said Australia had emerged as the nation with the booziest daters in the survey just ahead of Britain, where 90 per cent of male and 50 per cent of female participants turned to alcohol to lure a partner.

"Maybe we do feel a lot more confident after a few drinks ... perhaps it loosens them up and they feel more attractive," Ms Lawson said.

"A lot of people may feel it brings out the most sparkling aspects of their personality."

A sense of humour was more appealing to the Australians surveyed than financial status - a trend reflected worldwide.

"Globally, forget the hefty bank balance because a sense of humour is the factor that is the biggest turn off if you don't have it," Ms Lawson said.

Meanwhile in Australia, 30 per cent of women thought you could date only one person to find "the one" while 30 per cent of the men wanted to date 20 or more women before settling down, according to the survey.

Eighty per cent of Australians interviewed believed the best way of meeting a prospective partner was through friends.

But only 10 per cent of the men thought online dating was the most effective way of starting a relationship.

In France, Brazil, Italy and Spain, physical appearance was listed as a respondents' top priority during a first encounter.

I agree with this, especially in regards to my courtship of BustyB...

in pitch dark i go walking in your landscape.
broken branches trip me as i speak.
just coz you feel it doesnt mean its there.
just coz you feel it doesnt mean its there.

There's always a siren
Singing you to shipwreck
(Don't reach out, don't reach out
Don't reach out, don't reach out)
Steer away from these rocks
We'd be a walking disaster
(Don't reach out, don't reach out
Don't reach out, don't reach out)
just coz you feel it doesn't mean its there.
(theres someone on your shoulder)
(theres someone on your shoulder)
just coz you feel it doesn't mean its there.
(theres someone on your shoulder)
(theres someone on your shoulder)
There there!

why so green and lonely?
and lonely
and lonely

heaven sent you to me
to me
to me

we are accidents
waiting waiting to happen.

we are accidents
waiting waiting to happen
