A US man has been discovered dead in his girlfriend's cat door, leaving authorities confused about his exact manner of death.

The man, Charles Tucker Junior, was using the animal entry to gain access to his girlfriend's home on Sunday morning when he became stuck, News4Jax reported.

Officials said his girlfriend made the bizarre discovery only hours after she ordered him out of her house.

"Maybe at 3am, my older brother called me and told me — he was crying — that she had called him and she found him dead in the door," said Tucker's friend, Will Elliot.

Mr Elliot said he lived down the road from where the victim was found.

"He's a big guy," he said.

"I don't even know how he could fit through there.

"They said he had one arm through there and his head was caught in there like he was to reach up and unlock the door because there's no way he could fit through there."

Tucker's girlfriend dialled emergency services but by the time they arrived four minutes later, he was already dead.

Investigators said the incident was one of the strangest they had seen.

The cause of death is still undetermined.

Officers are awaiting autopsy results.
