At some point one must chooses actions and therefore must face certain consequences.

Although that makes no sense ("chooses actions"???), I see your point.

But a sovereign nation has decided on penalties for certain crimes it might be tough but that is the way it is.

Again, understood. It does not mean I must agree with it.

So Craig if they where men in there 50's they would not be worthy of sympathy? It's cause they are young and naive. What if they where old and naive. Or does age somehow impart wisdom on you?

Good question, I'm not exactly sure what I would feel in this situation. I think age brings mental maturity and greater thought for the decison making process if that's what you are asking.

this cult of youth thing is silly to me...

I don't understand what you are saying by this.

You are completley missing my point.

I am not arguing the laws, or debating the fact that they knew about these laws. They are in place for whatever reason and that is fine.

My point is that with all that in mind, it's still a very sorry situation for 9 young (all be it guilty, misguided and stupid) Australians. You can rave on about laws and society pro's, con's and rites of passage all you want - they fact is I still feel some degree of sympathy for them, and quite frankly am a bit baffled at how you three feel nothing.

Your point is understood, and irrelevant to the facts.

And you're right, I don't feel anything about it.
Why does it baffle you?
It's just news to me, totally unrelated to my life...

this will be way off topic

Dude the "chooses" was a typo...it is "chose actions" or get rid of the must and make it "one chooses actions". Take your pick.

On you agreeing with anything - No one said you have to agree with anything. That is YOUR right. If enough people agree with you in our system of nation states in our case "Australia" it will become everyone's right.... That's all democracy is manufacturing of consensus and that consensus becoming the majority viewpoint. Unfortunately it is a system fraught with inequality, injustice and terrible consequences it is also probably the best of the worst... Politicians are keenly aware of this therefore the battle for hearts and minds...

The cult of youth thing is that we feel more sympathy for our youth instead of ALL people.

You know all those empty platitudes "think of the children", "what about the children"... as Bill Hicks put "it is there an age limit on your sympathy"

okay that's way off topic....but it is a favourite topic of mine....check out stuff on the Net...its hella interesting...

I agree with those Hicks sentiments.
Once you are an adult, age has nothing to do with maturity.
